The Los Angeles-Grammy Awards employs inclusive riders who require producers to recruit and hire a wider variety of candidates behind the scenes and in front of the camera for next year’s ceremony.
The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday that riders will be added to an agreement with producers to stage the 64th Annual Awards as a way to ensure fairness and inclusiveness at all production levels.
Harvey Mason, Jr., President and CEO of the Academy, called the concept a “monumental step” for the inclusive music community. The full inclusion rider will be released on September 16th.
Riders require Grammy producers to audition, interview, and hire on-stage and off-stage people who have historically and systematically been excluded from the industry.
“As the academy continues its journey of change, industry diversification is at the heart of all the decisions we make,” Mason said in a statement.
“We are dedicated to fostering an industry-wide inclusion environment and hope that our efforts will serve as a model for our peers in the music community.”
The Academy’s initiative was created in collaboration with several groups, including Color of Change, co-authors of Inclusion Riders Karpana Kotagal and Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni, and Ryan Butler, founding director of the Warner Music / Blavatnik Center for Music Business at Howard University. I did.
